What is the Tanjong Rhu Community Composting Project?

Tanjong Rhu Community Composting Project is the first of its kind systematic pilot study to explore decentralized, community-driven household food waste recycling as an innovative, circular solution. Funded by National Environment Agency, Singapore’s Call for Ideas Grant, this project has been setting an example in community driven behavioral shift towards food waste recycling.

The main objectives of this project are:

  • To reduce food waste: Significantly decrease the volume of food waste sent to landfills from the Tanjong Rhu neighborhood.
  • Create high-quality compost: Utilize the Bokashi method to produce nutrient-rich compost for use in community gardens and green spaces.
  • Build a sustainable model: Develop a program model that can be easily replicated in other residential areas.
  • Increase awareness and participation: Educate residents about the benefits of food waste recycling and empower them to become active participants.
  • Foster community engagement: Promote collaboration and a sense of shared environmental responsibility among Tanjong Rhu residents.

The food waste is collected, anaerobically fermented, and then sent off to a composting site to be turned into high-quality organic compost.  We are committed towards promoting regenerative soil practices by improving the ecological network of the Singapore Soil.
